Dr. Philip John is a Senior Consultant in psychiatry in Kochi, Kerala, India for the past 35 years and also has regular consultations at Child Guidance Clinic (CGC), Sharjah, United Arab Emirates(UAE). Graduated in Medicine from Medical College, Trivandrum and holds MD in Psychiatry from the prestigious National Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences (NIMHANS), the premier institute for neurosciences in Asia.
Known across India as an erudite speaker on clinical topics, he has addressed psychiatrists, neurologists, physicians, pediatricians and the medical fraternity in their periodic conferences as faculty in cities across India and overseas. He regularly presents papers in national and international conferences, and he is widely traveled across the world. He is also a sought-after speaker in official gatherings of school principals, teachers and parents.
He has edited reference books in psychiatry, and authored chapters on child psychiatric disorders in various pediatric and adult reference books. He served as an expert for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi, India. Associated with the World Health Organisation (WHO), India Country Office. He has co-authored the chapter on ‘Depression in the Elderly’ edited by Dr. D. Rosenblatt, Dept. of Geriatrics, University of Michigan, USA. The chapter on ‘Psychological Co-morbidity in LD’ in a reference book published by Sage Publications, UK, was written by him. He is also the author of ‘Dyslexia in India’ in The International Book of Dyslexia: A Guide to Practice and Resources by John Wiley and Sons, New York.
Dr. Philip John is noted for pioneering the shift of psychiatry into mainstream medicine in Kerala, to make it a popular policlinic outpatient open office practice system at Peejays Policlinic, Cochin, Kerala. He started his career in psychiatry by setting up and heading the department of psychiatry at the then largest private referral hospital in the state for over ten years.
The child psychiatry division, Peejays Child Guidance Clinic (CGC) was started as a multidisciplinary guidance centre for children with learning and behavior difficulties. The Child Guidance Clinic (CGC) at Sharjah, UAE also functions with a multidisciplinary team. He visits UAE for consultations, during the last week of every month.
The Visakha Oration Award instituted by the Indian Psychiatric Society (SZ) for outstanding contribution to Psychiatry has been bestowed on Dr. Philip John.
He has held several positions in various professional organisations. He is a Fellow of the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA). President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) at Cochin for two successive years, Chairman of the state HIV/AIDS Committee, Founder Trustee of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) blood bank at Cochin, Founder Trustee of the Society for Organ Retrieval & Transplant (SORT), Expert for the Amendment Committee of Persons with Disabilities Act, Government of India, at varying tenures. Currently he serves as Chairman, Biological Psychiatry Section, Indian Psychiatry Society (IPS).
Recent publications include Boundary debates: The new challenge of psychiatry in the Indian Journal of Psychiatry as guest editor and a chapter on Learning and other developmental disorders in India in ‘Sixty years of Psychiatric Research in India’, published by the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS).
In clinical practice, his areas of interest include adult neuropsychiatry as well as learning and behaviour disorders in children.
